As healthcare reform debate continues to rage, stalled on Capitol Hill, a revolution is already underway. No, I’m not talking about the Tea Party. I’m talking about Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. Sometimes known as “The Naked Chef,” Jamie has recently won the prestigious TED Prize for his charitable work to change the way our children eat and think about food. He just gave this incredible presentation last week as he accepted the award, and the $100,000 prize with which it comes.

Teach Every Child About Food

Jamie’s wish for his Food Revolution is simple, clear, and most importantly, attainable:“I wish for your help to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.” To hammer home his point, Jamie uses a barrage of staggering and shocking statistics:

  • Two-thirds of Americans are overweight and 27% (72 million people) are obese.
  • 32% (23 million) American children are obese or overweight.
  • Obesity accounts for nearly 10% of all medical costs, or $147 billion annually.
  • The life expectancy of this generation is predicted to decrease due to obesity-related health problems.

While this is just one part of the health reform this nation needs, it is one of the most important.  I’m glad we are starting to change our unhealthy culture of fast food toward a healthier more sustainable one.  Jamie’s efforts, combined with Michelle Obama’s push to end childhood obesity are excellent steps in the right direction.  I implore you to sign the petition, which is going to be presented to the White House to prove people want change, and support a healthier tomorrow. —Riley
